UoT observes International Mental Health Day

Like in other educational institutions of the world, the International Mental Health Day was also observed at the University of Turbat on 10th October, 2018. A public awareness programme was organized by the Department of Chemistry, UoT in the video conference hall. The theme of the programme was ‘Young People and Mental Health in a Changing World’.


The aim of the programme was to provide an opportunity to all stakeholders working on mental health issues to talk about their work, and what more needed to be done to make mental health care a reality for the people of Pakistan. Keynote speaker – Dr. Ilyas Baloch, a famous Clinical Psychiatrist from Balochistan – briefly described the importance of mental health in education, especially for the youth. He said, “Adolescence is a time of physical and psychological maturation, changing social roles and a move away from childhood towards greater independence and responsibility.” On behalf of Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Abdul Razzaq Sabir, Dr Haneefur Rehman, Dean Faculty of Science and Engineering, thanked the guests and participants for attending the event. Dr. Rehman said, “The UoT is committed to fulfil its social responsibilities by organizing a variety of awareness programmes throughout the year with regular intervals to support the professional development of the people from all walks of life. “The focus is on dissemination of information to bridge the gap between rigorous research and best practices with special reference to child and adolescent mental health.” Students performed dramas and visual arts on the theme ‘Young People and Mental Health in a Changing World’ for public awareness.
