IBLC at UoT Organizes a Seminar on the Poetic and Literary Contributions of Ghulam Hussain Shohaz

The Institute of Balochi Language and Culture (IBLC) at the University of Turbat (UoT) organized a one-day seminar on February 11, 2025, on the poetic and literary contributions of Ghulam Hussain Shohaz, a distinguished Balochi poet, writer, and intellectual. The seminar was presided over by Prof. Dr. Gul Hasan, Vice-Chancellor of UoT, while the renowned researcher, poet, and novelist, Dr. Fazal Khaliq Baloch, was the chief guest. After the seminar, a musical program was also organized. 

In his welcome address, Prof. Dr. Abdul Saboor, Dean of the Faculty of Literature and Languages and Director of IBLC, paid tribute to Ghulam Hussain Shohaz, acknowledging his significant contributions to the promotion and development of Balochi literature. He described Shohaz as a leading poet of his time, deeply rooted in classical traditions and poetic heritage.

Vice-Chancellor Dr. Gul Hasan commended IBLC for organizing this intellectually enriching literary seminar. He emphasized the importance of publishing the research papers presented at the seminar, urging that they be compiled and published in book form by the university. He also underscored the integration of the Balochi language with modern technology, stating that IBLC has the potential to fully document Balochi language and literature. He further expressed his ambition to make UoT a global hub for research on the Balochi language and literature, attracting scholars and researchers from around the world.

Speakers of the seminars included Dr. Fazal Khaliq, Dr. Tahir Hakeem, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, Dr. Ghafoor Shad, and Shahnaz Tariq, faculty members at IBLC, Baloch Khan lecturer at Atta Shad Degree College Turbat, and Iqbal Zaheer, a member of Izzat Academy Panjgur, provided a comprehensive analysis of Shohaz's life, education, social contributions, and literary works. They emphasized that his poetry beautifully captures nostalgia, the natural beauty of Balochistan, and the region’s cultural and literary heritage.

Shohaz's poetry was described as a bridge between the old and new generations of Balochi poets and writers. The speakers acknowledged his invaluable contributions to the promotion of the Balochi language, highlighting that his literary works continue to be widely read and respected both within and beyond Balochistan.

The second part of the seminar featured a musical performance where renowned Balochi singers, Ustad Arif and Shahjahan Dawoodi, brought Shohaz’s poetry to life through their soulful renditions. Their mesmerizing performances deeply moved the audience, earning resounding applause and appreciation from attendees.

The seminar was moderated by IBLC faculty member Tariq Raheem Baloch. The seminar was attended by prominent literary personalities, renowned scholars, current and retired government officials, representatives of various academic and literary organizations, deans, directors, heads of departments, faculty members, students, researchers, writers, cultural enthusiasts, and individuals from different walks of life, making it a truly memorable and impactful gathering.
