The Vice-Chancellor (VC) of the University of Turbat (UoT), Prof. Dr. Gul Hasan has emphasized the urgent need to preserve Makran’s historic karez system, a vital part of the region’s cultural and environmental heritage. Speaking on the occasion of World Water Day, he urged local people, institutions, and the global community to prioritize the restoration of this centuries-old water management system.

He also highlighted the Karez system’s crucial role in providing drinking water and irrigation, now at risk due to climate change, prolonged droughts, and excessive groundwater extraction. Many Karez channels have dried up, underscoring the need for immediate action to revive this sustainable irrigation source.

Reaffirming UoT’s commitment to water conservation, he outlined initiatives such as a wastewater treatment plant and a drip irrigation system, aligning with UN Sustainable Development Goals and Islamic principles of resource management. He also called for individual responsibility in water conservation, stressing that every drop counts.

UoT urged the inclusion of the Karez system in the World Heritage List, ensuring its protection as an invaluable legacy for future generations.
