A One Day International Seminar on “Cooling in Space” was organized by the Department of Chemistry University of Turbat on 26th April 2019. Internationally reputed Scientist Dr. Yar Jan Baloch, a Senior Research Scientist and Teaching Fellow at Graphene Centre Department of Engineering at the University of Cambridge, delivered lecture on cooling in space, sounding rockets, global warming, creating sensing in robots, and making of scientific shoes soles. Besides having an interactive session with faculty and students he also shared his research experiences of Cambridge University and motivated the students to focus on research. The lecture session was attended by the Dean Arts and Social Sciences Prof Dr. Abdul Saboor Baloch, Director QEC Prof. Dr. Gul Hassan, Dean faculty of Science and Engineering Dr. Haneef Ur Rahman, Controller Examinations Tanveer Ahmed, Dean Research Dr. Riaz Ahmed, Director ORIC Dr. Adeel Ahmed, Chairperson Chemistry Department Dr. Naeemullah, Deputy Registrar Ganguzar Baloch, Project Manager Family Planning district Kech Rasheed Baloch, faculty members, administrative staff and students.
Dr. Yar Jan said it was nothing but the education and hardworking that uplifted him at this place and given him an international repute.
His research work is based on Space based technologies. He was among the team of scientists on European Space Agency (ESA)’s Zero Gravity flight who were the first to test Graphene, a modern day marvel material, in Zero Gravity. Besides doing scientific experiments in Zero Gravity flight he also performed experiments in Sounding Rockets. Dr. Yar Jan Abdul Samad and his team was scheduled to take their experiments to the International Space Station in collaboration with the Microgravity Research Center in Brussels, ESA and other European partner institutions and private sector organizations. His invention on cooling devices in Space has been covered by international media. He has won several awards for his research work such as the Innovator of the Year by the technology development company, The Outstanding Research Reviewer of the year 2017 by the Royal Society of Chemistry UK, Nano Today Best Scientific Presentation and many other awards at international scientific conferences. In addition to research he teaches on Graphene Technology at the University of Cambridge and supervises numerous masters and PhD students. He also delivered lectures at several other international academic institutions. He is a guest editor of a scientific journal called Sensors. Prior to moving abroad he obtained his bachelor degree in engineering from Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute (GIKI) in Pakistan. He graduated from GIKI with two gold medals (one for best academic performance and other for best overall performance). He is one of the only two graduates in the history of GIKI to win two gold medals at their graduation.
Balochistan has always been considered one of the least educated regions and it has been pointed out that the people do not seem to be interested in enriching themselves with blessings of education. On the contrary, the people of Balochistan have proved their talent and capability whenever and wherever they have gotten a platform to polish their talent. Dr Yarjan Abdul Samad from Buleda, a village near Turbat in Baluchistan, Pakistan had acquired his early education from his native village, then proceeded to Lyari, Karachi for further studies. In his welcome address, Dr. Haneef Ur Rehman thanked Dr. Yar Jan Baloch and appreciated his efforts for being the first space scientist from Pakistan. At the end Prof. Dr. Gul Hassan on behalf of UoT Vice Chancellor Prof Dr. Abdul Razzaq Sabir presented honorary shield to Dr. Yarjan and thanked him for visiting Turbat University and delivering an informative and inspirational lecture to students. He said the visit of the young Baloch Scientist to the University of Turbat and interaction with faculty and students spark a new soul to the students of University of Turbat.
