Responsible Digital Citizenship Workshop at UoT

The University of Turbat (UoT), in collaboration with the Institute of Business Administration (IBA) and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), organized a workshop on "Responsible Digital Citizenship" on September 26, 2024, at the university's video conference room. The event was inaugurated by UoT Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Jan Muhammad, and attended by faculty members, administrative staff, and students, who actively participated in discussions on topics such as digital safety and responsibility, information disorder, the contemporary role of digital citizenship, and the contributions of educated youth in promoting responsible digital practices.
In his opening remarks, Prof. Dr. Jan Muhammad said that this workshop was part of the University of Turbat’s commitment to equipping its students with the knowledge and professional skills necessary to flourish in the digital age, especially in the responsible use and sharing of information on social media.
He emphasized the importance of critical thinking, adherence to the country’s laws, and upholding constitutional values to address the challenges of the digital age. Highlighting the dangers of misinformation and fake news, the Vice Chancellor underscored the increasing responsibility of digital citizens to share accurate and verified information and avoid sensationalism.
He said that it is the responsibility of digital citizens not only to provide a platform for marginalized voices to be heard but also to open healthy discussion on prevailing important issues to be addressed.
He encouraged digital media operators to combat fake news, promote a culture of responsible citizenship, and democratic values, and promote tolerance, interfaith harmony, patriotism, and respect for human rights.
The guest speaker of the event, Mr. Shahzeb Ahmed Hashim, lecturer at IBA, and editor Dawn Prism delivered a talk in the workshop. He discussed the positive use of digital platforms, cognitive biases, hate speeches, and the growing significance of digital responsibility. He encouraged participants to be mindful of their digital footprint and to use technology for positive societal impact.
The event was coordinated by senior journalist Mr. Gohram Aslam with Dr. Muzaffir Hussain, Director of Student Affairs at UoT serving as the focal person. The event concluded with a Q&A session, where participants asked various questions to the guest speaker on various aspects of digital citizenship.
In the end, UoT’s Registrar Mr. Ganguzar Baloch presented the university commemorative shields to the guest speaker and event coordinator.
